Faro International Airport (FAO) is the main gateway to the Algarve and is well-connected to major European cities through direct flights. Airlines such as TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, EasyJet, and British Airways operate frequent flights to and from Faro. The airport is located just 6 km from the city center, with several transport options available:

  • Airport Shuttle: Several shuttle services operate between the airport and various locations in Faro and the Algarve.
  • Taxis: Taxis are available outside the terminal, and Uber and Bolt also operate in the area.
  • Bus: The local EVA Transportes bus service (Line 16) connects the airport to Faro city center in approximately 15 minutes.
  • Car Rental: Major car rental companies operate from the airport, providing an option for those wanting to explore the region independently.

Travel Within Portugal

  • By Train: Faro is part of Portugal’s national rail network, with direct connections to Lisbon, Porto, and other Algarve destinations. The Alfa Pendular high-speed train connects Faro to Lisbon in approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • By Bus: Intercity bus services such as Rede Expressos and FlixBus provide frequent and affordable connections between Faro and other Portuguese cities.
  • By Car: The A2 motorway links Faro to Lisbon in about 2.5 hours, while the A22 (Via do Infante) motorway runs along the Algarve coast for easy access to nearby towns and beaches.

Local Transportation

Travel in Portugal and EU

Faro enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. In August, temperatures typically range from 20°C to 30°C, with long hours of sunshine and very little rainfall. Daily sunshine can last between 10 to 12 hours, making it a prime time for outdoor activities and exploring the city’s coastline. Rainfall is minimal during this period, with precipitation levels averaging between 2-5 mm.

Currency

The official currency in Faro, as in the rest of Portugal, is the Euro (€). Currency exchange services are available at banks, exchange offices, and post offices. ATMs are widely accessible and typically offer competitive exchange rates.

Credit Cards & Payment Methods

Most hotels, restaurants, and shops in Faro accept major credit and debit cards, such as Visa and Mastercard. American Express is accepted in some locations but less frequently. Contactless payment options, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, are becoming increasingly common. However, small businesses, markets, and some cafés may require cash payments, so carrying some euros is advisable.

Banks & ATMs

ATMs (known as “Multibanco”) are widely available throughout Faro and operate 24/7. Many banks do not charge fees for withdrawals, but it is recommended to check with your home bank regarding international transaction fees. Portuguese banks typically follow standard business hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Passport & Visa Requirements

A valid passport is required for entry into Portugal. Visitors from the EU, EEA, and Schengen Area countries do not need a visa. For travelers from other countries, visa requirements vary. It is recommended to check with your local Portuguese consulate or embassy before traveling.

  • Shops: Most shops in Faro operate Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Larger stores and shopping centers typically remain open throughout the day and may extend hours on weekends.
  • Supermarkets: Generally open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, with some larger supermarkets staying open until late.
  • Restaurants & Cafés: Many restaurants serve lunch from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm and dinner from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
  • Museums & Attractions: Opening hours vary, but most are open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Some museums may be closed on Mondays.

Faro operates in the Western European Time Zone (WET, UTC+0) during standard time and switches to Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+1) from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
